24-Hour Model Weather Forecast for the Sydney Olympics

Wei Wang, Bernard Pailthorpe, Milton Speer, Bruce Buckley, Russel Morrison and Lance Leslie

The Bureau of Meteorology was the official provider of weather services for the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Weather models created at UNSW were improved  in order to provide high resolution weather forecasts. The HIRES model ran everyday and the output was visualised automatically and updated on the VisLab weather web server.

Although the service stopped in December 2000, the following pages demonstrate the system:

» HIRES 5km: Rainfall over Sydney

» HIRES 5km: Wind over Sydney

The following videos show some of the visualisations created at the beginning of the project.

This work was funded by an ARC SPIRT grant in 1997 between Vislab at the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales and the Bureau of Meteorology.
