View the Puppy (VRML 1.0)
The VRML Puppy was created by Horst
Kiechle (artist in residence) and Geoff
Horne
at Sydney VisLab.
Doug Knox and
Oswald Risco from D.W. Knox & Partners
kindly provided the original geometry.
Due to the technical limitations of VRML at this early stage in its development, we decided to create an artistic interpretation of Jeff Koon's Puppy rather than attempting a realistic representation. A new, skin-like surface was put over the original geometry. On this new surface approximately 600 points were chosen at random. These points were used to position four different kinds of stylized flowers. At a distance the flowers are approximated through simple geometric primitives. As one moves closer to the VRML Puppy they change in colour and shape.
The following images show the VRML Puppy
from three different, pre-defined camera angles above the consol of a
typical VRML browser (In this case the SGI browser 'WebSpace
Navigator').

A closer view from the bottom up towards the snout. Althouh a somewhat unusual angle, it was a favourite angle amongst visitors from which to view Jeff Koons' 4-storey tall Puppy. From this distance all of the stylized flowers have changed colour - some have changed their shape.

Immersed in the 'fur' of the VRML Puppy the flowers change shape yet again. Navigation through the three-dimensional space defining Puppy turns into a kaleidoscopic trip through abstract images.
