Computers and Supercomputers

With the invention of the transistor in 1948, computers became smaller and faster during the late 1950s throughout the 1060s.

The development of integrated circuits at large scale (LSI), then very large scale (VLSI) and ultra-large scale (ULSI) helped diminish the size and price of computers which have now almost become a household item.

In the race of building faster and better computers, the record is presently (in 1997) held by a 7,264-processor parallel supercomputer built by Sandia National Laboratory and Intel Corp.

Cray Research will provide before the year 2000 the world's most powerful supercomputer to Los Alamos National Laboratory.
