VisLab presents a hands-on workshop: "Introduction to Cerius2, a molecular modelling and simulation software".
Web Workshop Friday 8 November
This time we are focussing on just Web Writing, with beginner's and advanced sections. We are planning more courses, contact us for more details.
Software Install Friday 3 November
New Application Software: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator have been installed. They may be run from the ToolChest (see the Applications menu), or from the command line (photoshop and illustrator). Due to licensing, they will only run from redgate. If you run them from another host, they will still execute on redgate, but send the display to your local host - that is, they run remotely. They are each single-licenses - only one copy will run at a time.
Unfortunately, Photoshop will not run on lewis.
VisLab featured in IRIS online Wednesday 25 October
IRIS online is a magazine from Silicon Graphics delivered by email in Web format (although it's not clear why you can't just read it online.) We've been featured in the Visualisation section - to have a look at what they wrote about us, you can visit SGI's Web site and subscribe (although all the information is based on our own Web pages, so it may be easier just to read it here!).
Web Course Wednesday 18 October
Come and join us and learn how to use the Web.
Here is some online material used in the Web Course:
  • WWW Course hunt
  • Graphics formats (from VisLab SGI's only)
  • Yahoo - Computers and Internet:Internet:World Wide Web:HTML Editors
  • Yahoo - Computers and Internet:Internet:World Wide Web:HTML Converters

  • Yahoo - Computers and Internet:Software:Data Formats:HTML:Validation/Checkers

  • CSIRO page with usage statistics
  • The Counter Terrorist Page
  • Registering Web pages
  • New Domain Name Wednesday 27 September
We have just changed our domain name from vislab.su.edu.au to vislab.usyd.edu.au in line with the rest of Sydney University. This should not affect users too much, but a couple of things have changed (see below). Referring to the old domain name will continue to work for one year, but we would like you to start using the new 'usyd' name immediately.

Email: VisLab email addresses have changed from username@vislab.su.edu.au to username@vislab.usyd.edu.au<

Host Names: The full names of all machines have changed accordingly, for example to connect to redgate remotely, you should now use: % rlogin redgate.vislab.usyd.edu.au

    VisLab Partnerships Friday 22 September
A Co-operative Multimedia Centre (CMC) grant was awarded recently to Access Australia. This million dollar collaboration will facilitate the rapid development of an Australian interactive multimedia communications industry by fostering co-operation between its members from educational institutions and industrial organisations involved in the production and distribution of interactive multimedia communications products. Bernard Pailthorpe and VisLab played a strong role in creating the proposal for Access Australia, and this close involvement will continue.

VisLab will also be one of the foundation tennants at the Australian Technology Park, the first stage of which is nearing completion in Redfern. We will be setting up a second training lab, and together with the University of New South Wales and the Australian Super-Computing Facility will be operating a 16 processor SGI Challenge supercomputer.

    Screen Savers Friday 22 September
New ``HayeSaver'' screen savers have been added to the SGI toolchest. They do very little to save phosphor, but hey! - we like'em. Check out HypnoSaver.

You can choose one of them from the ToolChest menu: Desktop -> Customise -> Screen Saver.

PRISMS 6.0 & SAGE Upgrade Wednesday 20 September
Prisms version 5.5.4 has been upgraded to version 6.0.

The new modeller and sop editor SAGE has been installed. Just type

    % sage
at the unix prompt on a prisms-licensed workstation to see it. This release is an indication of what we may expect when the Houdini package is released by Side Effects.

    Web workshop Wednesday 13 September
We held a hands-on Web workshop, in two parts: Using the Web and Web Writing. We are planning more courses, this time focussing on just Web Writing, with beginner's and advanced sections. The next courses will be on Oct 4 and Oct 18. Contact us for more details.
    VRML Friday 1 September
VisLab is now acting as the Antipodean mirror for the SDSC VRML repository. The SDSC site has become the best known and detailed site for VRML information on the Web.

Why not have a browse of it now ?

    New Tools Friday 5 August
Some new tools have been added to the vislab software suite:
    mica
mica (the Multiple Image Conversion Application) will convert between any image format and will operate on multiple files (batch mode). For help type:
    % mica
    photo
photo is a new utility that replaces 'slide' for taking photos of the screen. photo has the added feature of being able to view multiple images and in either zoomed or unzoomed format, with a choice of background colours. To run photo the command is:
    % photo [image1] [image2] [...
    AVS Upgrade Monday 20 August
The VisLab version of AVS has been upgraded from version 4 to version 5. There is little difference between the two, but it features the addition of the NEW graph viewer, with many improved graphing features.
    Matlab Upgrade Friday 18 August
Matlab has been moved from a node-locked license to a floating license. This means that Matlab will now run on all vislab machines
    PRISMS Update Monday 14 August
The prisms software has been upgraded to version 5.5.4. it is a minor upgrade but it will hopefully fix some of the bus errors that have been occuring. Note we have been able to prove that the 'boolean' SOP has been modified and that some users are finding that their boolean operations no longer work. There is a workaround, see Geoff if you have problems.
Adelaide Media Resource Centre celebrates 21 years Thursday 6 July
VisLab took part in the opening of ``Site B'' of Adelaide's Media Resource Centre (MRC).

[Screenshot] An internet video conference was setup over six sites, including the Mercury and Iris Cinemas in Adelaide, with an audience of approximately 300 people. Guests included Don Dunstan (Adelaide site), Virtual Artists (Brisbane site), and multimeda artist Koichi Mori (Japan site). Cathy Robinson (CEO Australian Film Commission) and Sue Milliken (Chair Australian Film Commission) joined the internet celebrations from VisLab (Sydney site). Phillip Adams (ABC Radio National) sent his apologies at the last minute as he was unable to attend.

Above is a screenshot taken at the end of the video conference, click on it to see a full size view (JPEG 78 K).

VisLab is holding tours for the science school students at two times each day for the next two weeks; 9 to 10:30am and 3:30 to 5pm. Due to the large number of students, the lab will be closed for these times. Further information is on the VisLab notice board by the front door.
Major machine upgrades Friday 7 April
We've added RAM so that all of the VisLab SGI Indigo workstations now have 48 megabytes of RAM. This has then meant we were able to upgrade all of the SGI workstations to IRIX 5.3, which requires more than 16 MB of RAM. You will notice a few differences, one being that your windows will appear as you left them when you last logged out. The machines should all work the same way now, rather than having to remember different ways of doing things on different machines. In addition, more software will work on more of the machines.
xv 3.1 installed Monday 27 February
After almost 2 years, a new version of the popular image tool xv has been released. The layout of the buttons has been changed slightly, notably the incredibly useful Visual Schnauzer button has been moved to become an item under the menu Windows. There are other improvements, including an improved Grab Button which lets you save a part of your screen as an image, and new convolution algorithms. If you're in VisLab right now, you can read page 7 of the xv manual for a list of new features, and page 8 for a one page summary of what xv does.

To run xv just type: % xv

If you need to use the older version (3.0) you should type: % xv3.0

    PRISMS Update Monday 6 February
Version 5.5 of prisms has been installed. It mostly contains bug- fixes, although there is a new feature called "beatbox". It allows realtime modification of an animation as it plays. Further info can be found on the magazine rack by the door.
