This visualisation examines how the energy flow of the HE11 mode varies with $z$ , the propagation direction. Figure 13 is a 3-D representation of the fibre, where the exposed surfaces have been coloured according to the magnitude of the energy flow. To effectively observe the internal behaviour, an angular segment was removed from the length of the fibre. From this, we can see that the energy flow has a periodic dependence with $z$ , and this particular length of fibre has approximately one full period.
