2.2 Vectorial Representation of the transverse Electric Field Components

In this visualisation we analyse the transverse electric field for the TE01, TM01, HE11, EH11, HE21 and HE23 modes, in a two layer step-index optical fibre. The techniques used here consist of two parts. First, the transverse electric field was indicated by the use of arrows. The length of the arrows represents the magnitude of the field and the direction of the arrows represents the direction of the transverse electric field. The context of these arrows was provided by plots showing the magnitude of the transverse electric field as a coloured disc behind the arrows.

Figure 7: Magnitude of the transverse component of the Electric Field of the TE01 mode.

Figure 8: Magnitude of the transverse component of the Electric Field of the TM01 mode

Figure 9: Magnitude of the transverse component of the Electric Field of the HE11 mode.

Figure 10: Magnitude of the transverse component of the Electric Field of the EH11 mode.

Figure 11: Magnitude of the transverse component of the Electric Field of the HE21 mode.

Figure 12: Magnitude of the transverse component of the Electric Field of the HE23 mode.

From Figure 7 we can see that the TE01 mode seems to be independent of \( r \) since the electric field has no \( r \) component, resulting in arrows which form concentric circles. Similarly, Figure 8 shows that the TM01 mode is independent of \( \phi \) since the electric field vectors have no \( \phi \) components, resulting in arrows pointing radially outward from the centre. From Figures 9 and 10 we can see that the HE11 and EH11 modes are symmetric about the \( y \) axis. Also, Figures 11 and 12 show a two-fold axial symmetry of the HE21 and HE23 modes respectively.
