Natures Finest Photonic Crystal

The Seamouse

Web Pages:

Conclusion

Modelling the Seamouse photonic band structure proved to be a very interesting and rewarding project. Visualising information and generating datasets which had previously not been seen before was also an exciting experience. The seamouse appears to have a three dimensionally symmetrical structure which is finer than many of the dielectric photnic structures which can be industrially produced today. The future applications of photonics in higher efficiency antennas and receivers at microwave and millimeter wave frequencies, new optical computers suggest modelling a natural phenomenon such as the seamouse's iridescent hairs as an advance in understanding the natural evolution of technology.
